A mountain bike frame with rigid forks, triple racing bike gear set with disc brake wheels, may be 700c wheels or 26 wheels with slicks just to keep the mountain bike theme. Would I be able to keep up with a racing bike with this set up?
I think some off these idiots answering your question think your just changing wheels and tyres. I know where you are going you want a racer with disc brakes and the only option is to convert a mountain bike because cycle cross frames are a bit pricey. I have done this by getting rid of the standard mountain bike components and replacing with triple racing bike components like 52/42/30 chain set, 11/28 cassettes. I would recommend changing the wheels to 700c with 28 or 32 tyre's because using standard mountain bike wheels with slick or semi slick tyre's when cycling at speed you would have stability issues. To lighten the mountain bike down a bit I would recommend changing the seat post and handle bars to carbon. Its a great bonus having disc brakes in wet weather especially in the winter months, rim brakes are useless in the wet that's why I converted a mountain bike and if your a fit cyclist you can burn off people on racers. I got the idea from looking at the GT Zum 2.0 city mountain bike, but I would change the forks to rigid to bring the weight down and better the road performance.
