Building your own AR or AK?
I asked a question the other day about AK's and someone answered with saying to build your own. I was already interested in building my own AR but I'm pretty clueless I admit when it comes to AK's. I've been looking around and it seems the reciever on the AK's in the kits are torched off? So to build your own AK would I need to do a lot of work to put a reciever back on? I really don't want to have to do any welding. I know how but its not something I'd want to do on a rifle. Last question for the AR. If I bought an upper reciever with a barrel separate will I need a gunsmith to "screw" on the barrel to the upper reciever? Should I just buy an upper reciever with a barrel on it already?
Semper~Fi and long live the second ammendment.
If you build an AK from a kit, there are a lot of issues you must address. The old reciever remains and rivets must be removed from the barrel trunion and then the new reciever must be rivited on. In my opinion, after reading an article about this, WELDING would be easier, - but that's not an option. Unless you have some very specific tools and fixtures for holding everything in alignment, and know exactly what you are doing, you can warp the new reciever, or screw up your barrel alignment at this stage.
Then you have to buy a semi auto trigger group, and a specified number of US made parts off a BATF list and substitute them for the (other than the trigger group)identical, foreign parts, or, you will be committing a federal felony by creating an "imported foreign assault rifle" under section 922R of the National Firearms Act.
After all that extra expense buying duplicate parts, you still need to know how to headspace the rifle to keep it from blowing up in your face.
It CAN be done though, and if you decide to attempt it, make it easy as possible on yourself by purchasing:
"Building an AK from a Parts Kit"
a DVD from American Gunsmithing Institute.
This should be the first 29.95 you spend on the project.
On the AR, if you have to have your upper assembled,
(if it's not a complete barreled upper with bolt and carrier) Yes, you would probably be wise to have a gunsmith mate the barrel to the reciever, set the headspace on the bolt, and install the gas tube. Then, you pay the man....
If you buy a complete upper half, (including bolt and carrier)
this isn't an issue. After completing assembly on the lower, you just position your complete upper assembly in position on your completed lower, insert your front pin, insert bolt/carrier, close the rifle, insert your rear pin, and it's a gun.
Being as AR's are an AMERICAN gun, the silly 922R ruling doesn't apply, although local laws, may.
It's just a lot easier.
AGI also makes an AR-15 assembly DVD.
They really pay for themselves by eliminating all your questions.
