Four answers give one and little information why. Pure, Zirconium, 1 percent and 2 percent.
I know that Zirconiated is my preference. I don't know the material science or physics why, for that you should contact the R&D dept. of a tungsten manufacturer. Pure used to be the way to go but with alloy developments zirconiated has become the preferred. Pure tungsten does have the highest heat capabilities but when higher amperages are uses the arc can become very unstable and the ball can 'fall' off. with zirconiated the arc is very stable,exhibits better start characteristics, i.e. no zap or sizzle that you will get sometimes with pure and will resist contamination better than pure. I use 1% zirconiated, but have never used 2%. Don't forget the key to using zirconiated is to sharpen the end to a point and then flatten the tip to about a third of the electrode diameter. when you do this the end will develop a small ball and your arc will similar to DC whereas it won't 'dance' erratically....
