i need some help with my fish tank.?
okay, so i just need help with some stuff.
i just got a brand new male betta fish today. this is my first betta fish but not my first fish in general. i have the " eclipse" hexagon five gallon fish tank. i have had my fair share of fish. my beloved koi fish mary just died. well, anyways. i know i have to use water conditoner. i do have some, i guess it's called " nutrafin " and it says tap water conditoner. how much of it should i use and how often do i have to use it? well my new male betta charlie is adjusting right now. i don't want him to get lonely. and i know you can't have other betta fish but please suggest some other fish or frogs or something that i can put in my tank. thank you?
Is your tank properly cycled? http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquarium/cycling.php If not, you'll need to start that process immediately.
Here is what you need to know for your Betta to live a long and happy life:
1. A 5-gallon aquarium, which you have. Yay!
2. A filter is necessary in any tank in order to keep the water aerated and free of toxins. For Bettas it is best to set the filter flow to low, as they are not very strong swimmers. Another good option is a sponge filter,
3. A heater is essential. Bettas need warm steady temperatures of about 80F, to thrive. Constant fluctuation leads to stress, which inevitably leads to disease and often death. You can find an inexpensive heater for a small tank at any fish store.
4. In a 5-gallon tank, weekly 25% water changes, using a gravel siphon are necessary. Water conditioner must be added to the water before it is put in the tank to remove toxic chlorine, chloramine, metals, etc.
5. Bettas enjoy a well planted aquarium, (use live or silk plants, plastic can tear their fins,) with a cave or two for exploring and resting.
Bettas have been known to live for 10 years. I have personally known them live to for 6.
As far as tank-mates go, you are limited to either a few Ghost Shrimp, which your Betta may or may not eat, depending on his "personality", OR a small snail, such as a Ramshorn. Any other fish/critter companions would require an upgrade to at least 10-gallons.
