Best way to weld 4130 chromoly tubing with O/A gas torch?
I am told with experience one can weld chromoly tubing with a small o/a torch- meco, Smith, etc, yet little info on this other than Tinman sites. Also Is there an inverter, tig attachment for for a lincoln AC stick welder? I have heard of them but found nothing. I'd like to build a one off chromoly frame.
Reminder, tigs are expensive- although I may rent. chromoly steel was designed to be O/A welded initially, its' just that the tech became so good that anyone could do it with a tig. WW2, etc. I guess I'm asking for a bit of history here. Anyone know?
All through ww2 they welded 4130 with oxy/acetylene. If you try use a 70,000 lb mild steel wire the carbon difference will be replaced by the oxy/acetylene burning. (That is how in ww2 they could get the same micro structure across the weld) I would not use a "small" torch as the heat needed has to be sufficient enough to give you full penetration and complete fusion to all pieces. Be careful and do some research. Depending on what you are making you can get yourself in real deep.
Modern Welding by Althouse/Turnquist/Bowditch and Lincoln's book - The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding are good for start.
The FFA also has a lot of info or procedures for welding 4130 tig and gas.
It is best to tig it now days. Good luck!
