That viscosity is the first option from Ford's owner's manual, so I suppose that Ford set this for a hot climate where summer days might be over 40° C, but I've read several times that these engines don't tolerate other viscosity grade than 5W-30... Since the engine was engineered in Europe, I guess that other regions must follow their specifications... or a different climate is sufficient for changing them without affecting the engine´s function?

I have (well - my Mondeo has) a Zetec engine and I always use 15W-40.
If you really want to be nice to your engine, especially if you drive it hard, use synthetic oil because it is much better at extreme temperatures.
EDIT: I am a right dipstick. I've been using Castrol Edge which is 15W-30 (and very expensive).
