snail "baby" or unidentified organism...?
a while back there were like 50 white dots on the surface of my little tank... I told my biology teacher she said they were eggs so I was happy
then the eggs disappeared and i thought my snail had a "miscarriage"
NOW like a month later i looked at my tank today and there are what look like little cacoons/segmented worms that are hanging upside down form the water surface...
i saw like 2 drop and squirm, and when i looked at the coral-like rock in the tank some of the holes were clogged with these cacoon looking things.... does anyone know what these things are?!
some of them have heads and some have snail tentacles (appear-like)
Sea snails show quite a wide variation in life cycles. The primitive mollusc life cycle has 3 main stages. The eggs hatch into a tiny, swimming larva which swims and eats using thousands of tiny hairs called cilia. In most snails the eggs hatch directly into a second type of swimming larva, which is larger and more complex. These have a thin shell with a plate which covers the opening of the shell, a muscular foot, and two ciliated wing-like structures on either side of the head for swimming and feeding. These kinds of larvae may only stay briefly in the plankton, or may stay as plankton for up to several months.
Life cycles vary widely among different species of snails. I have never heard of a snail larva cocooning but it is possible. Watch your "babies" closely. If they do not appear to be developing shells in a month they should be removed.
If you must remove them, help prevent the spread of an unknown organism into the local water system by siphoning the water into a bucket and adding vinegar until it is a 50% solution (1 gallon tank would require 1 gallon of vinegar). Let this sit for at least an hour before dumping it. The vinegar will create an acid environment that will kill any organisms without adding toxins to the water system. Carefully clean everything in your tank including your coral and gently clean your snail to make sure nothing has attached to it.
