Rotary tool, grinding hardened steel, Al2O3 or SiC?
I've got an 18 volt rotary tool. I need to grind down a steel pin (axle) so that I can get it to fit inside a bearing. There seems to be an interference fit between the pin and the bearing. It's impossible to manually push the pin through the bearing. I want the pin to extend out 5mm on either side of the bearing.
So would a rotary tool be a good way to grind down this pin? Should I use Al2O3 or SiC grinding bits?
I want a little bit of friction between the pin and the bearing but right now this interference fit is just impossible to work with! What does industry do with an intereference fit? Do they just whack it with a big hammer?!?!
Interference fit keeps the inner race from spinning on the shaft under load.
No, a rotary tool is NOT the proper tool for the job, a lathe is the proper tool, IF you insist on doing this.
There are several ways of installing bearings under these conditions, including a hammer and driving guide to get it square and not damage the bearing or the pin in the process.
Suggest you need professional help.
