How do you weld the root pass on pipe?
Okay, I am welding 2G mild steel pipe and am having trouble getting my root pass to look right.For the root pass I am using a E6010 1/8 rod with clay flux and am running it about 55 to 60 (also on stick machines is the knob on the left volts or amps?) usually I set my gap by spacing it with 1/16 aluminum tig rods, so my gap is also 1/16. my root face(land) is about 1/4 to 1/8 the problem is I ran the same setup in 1G rotated and I got it on my first try but for some reason in 2G this setup does not work the keyhole will close up or it will not penetrate all the through Please help I shouldn't have to grind most of the day just to run a hot pass that does not repair the lack of penetration( also websites with tip on pipe welding with stick would be awesome)
I would move away from the 1/8" electrode and drop down to a 3/32" E6010. The smaller puddle will give you greater control. The second item would be that I would go with no more than 1/8" land. Third, with the 3/32" bring your amps up slightly...start your arc away from a tack weld and blow a "key hole" into the root, upon completion of opening the key hole without breaking the arc, slide the rod in deep into the groove so that your arc is actually on the face of the root...you will hear a change in sound once you are in the key hole (trust me you'll know)...with a slightly uphill angle to correct for gravity while in the 2G position simply bring your rod around maintaining the same angulation. You shouldn't have to whip the rod with the key hole technique.
Remember:
CLAMS
Current = Amps
arc Length = Your arc gap off the end of the electrode
Angulation = What angle you point your rod at
Manipulation = how you oscillate the electrode
travel Speed = how fast you move around the weld
Control those five factors and you will have a perfect weld everytime.
Hope this helps, any questions email me.

Look on youtube for welding videos, there have some decent ones there.
