Do you know the title of this book?
I read this book relatively recently (sometime after 2004) and it is narrated by a man who is working as a bartender when someone finds him/tracks him down to record his life story. I believe it is the first book of a series (i don't know if any others have been published). The book is him telling about his life begining as a child when he and his parents were traveling with an acting troupe. His father writes and performs a song about evil magical creatures that cause fire/flames to turn blue. These creatures kill his parents but the narrator survives and goes on to attend some kind of magical college/university. I don't remember many details except that he tries very hard to get access to the library and that he wins a flute charm/necklace at a bar after a gifted musical performance.
Any ideas?
Possibly it's "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss? It's in "The Kingkiller Chronicle", and it's the "Day One" book.
I read those books and it sounds very familiar to what you just summarized.
