I want to LEARN TO PAINT using OIL PAINTING?
I dont know how to start, is there any good websites you can recommend to teach me how to learn OIL PAINTING? I always wanted to do this for a looooongest time, but I dont have the opportunity to take lessons in the classroom. I would like to do it myself, and start learning hoe to paint.
A couple of years ago I was just like you. The way I started was I went out bought myself some oil paints and some brushes and a cheap stretched canvas and began painting a self portrait of myself. By doing this I was able to understand the formal as well a content type questions I had. Some of these questions can be answered by going to your local museum. The bigger the museum the better. While you are exploring the museums I would get a book that surveys art history. This will give you an understanding of how painting developed and what techniques interest you most. This is important for several reasons. First it is important to know what you are looking at. All paintings even the most seemingly representational are quite complex(ooook maybe not all of them.) Second looking at good work inspires you and even on a less conscious level informs your own work. Just by reading, painting on your own, and going to look at great works you will learn so much about what YOU want to do with oil paint.
I cannot recommend enough shelling out the 200 - 400 bucks it costs to take a continuing ed intro to painting course at your local art school. You will get access to a professor trained not only in art history (if you want to be a good painter you must study art history as you are painting), but also understand the materials. Oil painting is extremely toxic. You can really poison yourself if you do not know what you are doing. A teacher can give you the ins and outs of safe paint handling.
Finally, have fun with it. Painting is a great subject to study. Be intellectually curious and constantly challenge why and what you are painting.
Oh yeah you probably want to know what type of paints to buy. I would suggest buying Gamblin Brand paint really good pigment content for a reasonable price. Any Hog Bristle brushes are fine. Although don't get really small brushes as this will hinder your learning. Piece of glass for a palette. Linseed oil and turpenoid. Do not by turpentine or mineral spirits as they are quite dangerous if not used with proper ventilation. I would also suggest getting the Artist Hand Book. It is a great material reference for artists.
