how many footcandles does 400watt metal halide lamps provide?
The 400 Watt Metal Halide lamp puts out between 36,000 and 40,000 Lumens from the fixture. The footcandles that you ultimately get must be measured at the work surface. The "footcandle" measurement is "Lumens per square foot" at the work surface. So, ultimately, the foot candle readings is extremely dependent on the mounting height of the lamp. You haven't mentioned the mounting height, nor the application/ task you are trying to get the light to.
Some examples below may give you a range of footcandle measurements that you might expect, depending on your mounting height, and application.
1) If the 400 Watt Metal Halide is mounted at a 45' mounting height, as in many industrial warehouse sites, you may get about 15 footcandles (15 fc).
2) If that same 400 Watt lighting fixture is mounted in an exhibit hall at a 15' mounting height, you may get closer to 90 or 100 fc
3) If the fixture is mounted at a 2' mounting height, you may get 3,000 fc
Keep in mind that the fc reading is the greatest directly beneath the lighting fixture. As you take fc readings a few feet away from that centerpoint, the fc readings drop substantially --- by 20%, 30% maybe as much as 40% less when you move away from directly under the lighting fixture.
Also note that Metal Halide is not dimmable, and may have a bit of a restart/ restrike time delay, maybe as long as 5 or 10 minutes, after being turned off. So if you were to get a short power bump, where the power goes off for a second or two, then your metal halide lamps will not be able to restart until after they cool down for about 10 minutes.
