What is the most economical option for fixing my patio?
I have a slate patio, but only 2/3 of it is covered by an awning. The other 1/3 of the patio is exposed to the elements and has extensive damage - - weeds grow through the joints, and some of the slate has simply broken apart. I removed all the old slate and now have an uneven concrete mess! I've considered several options: filling with more concrete (either myself, or hiring out), or paving over what's left. I also need to make a more definite cut between the part of the patio that I'm keeping, and the crappy part that needs fixing - - should I even attempt using a portable circular saw with a masonry blade myself (I've never done it before . . . )? Thanks so much for your help!
If you're not experienced, I would suggest getting prices from contractors for repairs you have in mind. At the same time, pick their brains for options, prices, materials. After meeting with them, settle on one method of repairs. Contact the contractors again, informing you now have a definite plan to bid on. I have found when you give them a workplan to bid on, all your bids will be consistent. If contractors try to alter your plan, you can add the additional options to all bidders. If you decide to tackle this yourself after "learning" how to repair, check your local building codes. P.S. Don't forget contractor references. Good Luck!
