help with welding (fcaw)?
im having a problem with worm tracks in my beads. im using a lincoln power mig 255c with e71t1 .045 wire and a 75 25 mix for gas. volts set to 23.4 and wire speed in 250 ipm. what could be causing these worm tracks?
a 75/25 mix of........what? 75 Ar + 25 CO2?
The first think I'll ask, is how clean are your joints before you weld them?
Are you working in a humid environment?
The most likely cause of worm tracks is moisture, either on the joint surface or in the flux.
Moisture content in the flux itself can be an issue if you're using bargain priced welding wire from a careless manufacturer. Even wire from manufacturers with a good reputation can still absorb moisture if left in the open.
-Make sure you store your wire in an oven, before and after using it. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for baking and general storage.
-Try buying wire from a different supplier. Unlike solid MIG wires, flux core chemistry can vary significantly between different manufacturers.
-Another thing that might help is to increase your voltage and WFS as much as is reasonable, slow down your travel speed a bit, and in general increase your weld depth. This gives the weld puddle more time to de-gas itself.
Try increasing your stick-out length. This has the effect of "pre-heating" the wire. This sometimes helps.
Another possible cause is inadequate shielding. How's your gas flow rate? Too high can cause turbulence at the nozzle causing air to get mixed in.
Also, try using E70T1 instead, this is generally a more forgiving wire, Though, it's primarily designed for flat and horizontal. E71T1 is better suited for out-of-position welding.
Good luck.
