I have to think of a project for college. I had an idea that I could put a laser on the front of the drill so that when you start you press a button and it calibrates, then as you drill it reads the distance drilled. The problem I have however is that the drill is portable and therefore can be moved by the user, is there anyway to make it accurate such as some sort of auto-levelling device?
Making the assumption that the surface you are drilling into is flat then if you split a laser beam in two or use two lasers then you should be able to calculate what you want. If you have the two laser spots in line with the drill centre line the maths is quite easy. Think of similar triangles.
