Invention of the Industrial Revolution?
The invention: Who invented it?: What year?: What did the invention do?:
1.Flying Shuttle- John Kay in 1773 able to do work for 2 people more quickly
2.Cotton gin- Eli Whitney in 1793 separates cotton fibers from the seedpods
3.interchangeable parts- Eli Whitney in 1798 I don't know
4.Sewing Machine- Elias Howe in 1844 for making cloth more faster and easier
5.Power Loom- Edmund Cartwright in 1964 use for waving
6.Spinning Jenny- James Hargreaves in 1964 I don't know
7.First reliable steam engine- James Watt in 1775 I don't know
8.Steamboat- Robert Fulton in 1803 I don't know
9.Telegraph- Samuel F.B.Morse in 1832 I don't know
My Teacher said to search it online but there are some I just can't find so... can u help me check if some of them are correct and help me find the answers or sth
The invention: Who invented it?: What year?: What did the invention do?:
1.Flying Shuttle- John Kay in 1773 able to do work for 2 people more quickly. (1733 - Basically a bobbin that is fired across the weft on an otherwise conventional loom, could be worked by one person, saved having to pass the thread through manually, hence speeded things up several fold.)
2.Cotton gin- Eli Whitney in 1793 separates cotton fibers from the seedpods (Previously whole gangs of slaves had to do this very fiddly tack by hand, now they could be diverted to growing more cotton in the first place. Basically a pair of carding combs passing over each other)
3.interchangeable parts- Eli Whitney in 1798 I don't know (Honore Blanc seems to have been the first person to do this assembly a musket from a grab-bag of parts, though the idea is of great antiquity. The idea really comes of age with the manufacture of uniform, high accuracy measuring devises (from the like of Whitworth) allowing interoperable parts to by manufactured in different factories.)
4.Sewing Machine- Elias Howe in 1844 for making cloth more faster and easier (Thomas Saint had the principals down by & the IP by 1790 & by 1840 the uniforms of the French Army had their uniforms mechanically sewn... The productivity advantages are fairly obvious!)
5.Power Loom- Edmund Cartwright in 1964 use for weaving (1784, the next step up form the flying shuttle - but a much bigger step up! Did the work of dozens of weavers)
6.Spinning Jenny- James Hargreaves in 1964 I don't know (Produced cotton thread that was smoother & of more uniform diametre many times faster than a manual spinning wheel.)
7.First reliable steam engine- James Watt in 1775 I don't know (Steam engines had been about for almost 100 year by this point but had very low outputs for their size/cost; Watt added numerous elements that greatly improved efficency & his business partner Wilkinson was equally important providing high tolerance cylinders)
8.Steamboat- Robert Fulton in 1803 I don't know (A boat with an engine, first working model by Marquis Claude de Jouffroy in 1776, first reliable commercial steam vessel in 1786 by John Fitch, Pen.)
9.Telegraph- Samuel F.B.Morse in 1832 I don't know (Numerous other persons from the opening years of the 19thC played about with the idea, it was good enough to be used along 13 miles of the Great Western rail line by 1837. Later that year Morse's independantly developed (but fundamentally similar) system brought the advantage of being able to perform equally well while using much cheaper wiring)
