How do I drill this hole in the wood for the catapult?
see...I'm making this catapult that i saw on stormthecastle.com the ogre one aaand.....i got to the step where you are supposed to drill the hole in the plank...and am having trouble. Im using this dewalt drill, and can't really get a big enough hole....do you know how they make it so perfect on the website? I could really use your help...for 10 points.
A hole that size is usually made with a 'spade' bit. I'd say you want it to be just slightly larger than the dowel, or pipe, you are using to mount the catapult arm onto, to allow for free movement.
So - take what you are going to use as that 'dowel', or cross piece, which will go through those holes, to the hardware or building supply store, and get a spade bit just a little bit larger... no more than 1/8th inch larger... I myself would get it closer to 1/16th inch larger. Spade bits come in a large range of sizes, and you can get them in a set, or individually. If you were not drilling all the way thru the board, then I'd suggest a Forstner bit, to provde smooth sides and bottom. For this project though, you only need a spade bit.
By the way, its best to drill the hole with a scrap piece of wood under the piece you are drilling. Clamp the workpiece down if you find it difficult to hold the piece and run the drill.
Have Fun
