Possibly Bruised Toenail From Pointe?
Today was my second class of pointe. (Ever.)
Last week my right foot was fine, i didnt need any taping, just the usual ouch pouch. My left foot however, was giving me problems.
My left pinky toe seems to be getting alot of pressure, and its hurting my toenail alot. after about 10 minutes into the class, it hurts to go up onto pointe. i did trim my nails short enough, so i know its not the problem. after my first class, this week i put a bandaid(fabric) around it. that didnt seem to help anything at all.
at the moment, it isn't bruised, it just hurts like it is. It isn't purple or anything like that.
Is there anyone with experience in this that could give me some tips?
I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!
Get used to it, sister! I think I've lost the majority of my toe nails at some point or another.
That said, you could have an ingrown toenail (if this happens you need to see a doctor, don't try to fix it yourself) as the 1st poster mentioned.
You may have also trimmed your nails TOO short. You want some white showing, and you want to cut your nails straight across and then file them smooth. Do not shape them.
Another this is this: You've been on pointe for two classes. You're probably ''sitting'' in your shoes. This puts pressure on your toes and your nails and is a very bad habit. You want to pull up and have your weight in your heels (well, evenly distributed), not on your toes. You should feel like you're light enough to dance on egg shells, you should not be putting much weight on your toes. This will just cause your toes to get smooshed up in your shoes and you'll get blisters, bunions, and bruised nails.
Most likely scenario is you cut your nail improperly and it is now irritated. You can soak the foot in a warm salt water mix. If a blister or infection forms you can see your doctor.
I actually suggest you soak your feet in a basin with epsom salts and water every night for about 20 minutes. This will cause your skin to toughen up and will leave you less prone to blistering in the future.
Ouch pouches are enough! In fact, they're more than enough. If you start adding tape and bandaids and other things you're going to run out of room in your shoe!
Another possibility is that your shoe is a smidge too big for you and you're sinking down into it. If this is the case you do need new shoes.
A bandaid won't help the pain with a bruised or missing nail. You can take your preferred analgesic for pain relief if you need to. Otherwise you can just try icing it if it's really bad. I just broke two of my toes and ripped the nail off one while doing so. It was probably the most pain I've ever been in. All you can do is wait. They can't put a cast on a toe and they probably won't save your nail if it falls off. Just do the best you can to protect it. Nails will eventually grow back.
That all said, if you had a bruised nail you'd know right away. They turn a nasty purple right quick. If your bruising is very bad your doctor may need to drain a hole in your nail to let the blood out.
Pointe takes a lot of getting used to. This probably is a minor incident, you've just never felt this before. Trust me, you will. You'll also toughen up as you keep dancing. The more you do it the less it hurts.
Take care of your feet, you need them.
