What kind of welder should i get?
i want to get a welder for doing some home projects. my friend has a chicago electric, its a very simple mig welder. i can buy a new one for $110, its a flux core, but for $180 i can get the next model up that has the hook up for the shielding gas. i know the gas reduces splatter a lot, what other benefits are there of using the gas?
im just doing work on my truck mainly, building bumpers and fabbing suspension components. will the simple flux core welder work or should i bump up to get the gas?
i dont really care about it looking pretty, im leaning more towards budget
Gas is WAY better. The flux core wire does not bond as well. Be careful using a 110 MIG to weld suspension components. They do not burn as hot as a 220 Mig. I carry a 110 Lincoln in my chase truck for emergency repairs on our race trucks, but if we have to use it, we always repair the problem after the race with a hotter welder.
With the gas welder, you will need a regulator and a bottle or Argon/CO2 mix or straight CO2.
Look on craigslist for someone who is selling a used 220 Lincoln, Hobart or Miller.
