I'm trying to drill out a previously stripped 351w cast iron block to fit a 3/8 bolt for the water pump. I bought the helicoil kit, and used the specified 25/64 bit. Ive used helicoils before with great success, however, I cannot get the helicoil tap to even start threading into the block at that size. I'm at 27/64 now and still having the same problem. If it were a softer metal, like aluminum, it would obviously be easier. It almost seems as I will be at a 29/64 hole just to get the helicoil tap to make threads for this helicoil. I originally wanted to use threadserts, but I cannot get them at my current location. Ive looked everywhere on the internet for a solution with no avail.
Not being able to see the tools you have on hand, I am unsure how to answer this.
I have the feeling that the tap you are using is a bottoming tap, and what you need is a starter tap, then finish off with a bottoming tap. A starter tap has more taper to it so that you can get the threads started (hence its name).
