Keypad lock for entry door?

I just installed a keypad for a doorknob on an entry door. It works ok (not great so I don't know if that's mechanical or not) until I put the battery cover on. Then it won't work at all. The keys beep when you press them, but once the cover goes on they don't even respond to that. Are these things generally reliable? I paid $70!
