Math Homework Help I'm really tired ?
I got a math worksheet for homework. I'm confused on it everywhere because I have a headache and I am tired.
Pythagorean Theorem
1. How long must a ladder be if John places the bottom 5 feet from a wall to reach a window that is 36 feet from the ground ?
2. A baseball diamond is the shape of a square. The distance from home plate to first base is 90 ft. To the nearest tenth of a foot, what is the distance from home plate to second base ?
For #3 their is a picture of a circle with a radius of 9in. There is also like a 90 degree angle in it. What is the approximate length of line segment AB ?
The Pythagorean Theorem is:
a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where a, b, and c are the lengths of the sides of a right triangle (one with a 90 degree angle). c is the side opposite the 90 degree angle.
In each case draw a triangle representing the situation, then plug in for a and b or a and c and solve for the other side by subtracting from both sides and taking the square root.
I'll do #1 as an example:
Here if you draw a triangle 36 ft goes up and 5 ft across so c (across from the corner) is unknown.
36^2 + 5^2 = c^2
c = sqrt(36^2 + 5^2) = about 36 feet
