What are the dark plates in welding helmets made of? 10 POINTS?
Dark plates are used in welding helments to block out the UV rays, and therefore prevent arc eye. I just wanted to know what these plates were specifically made of? A link would be great if you have one.

Tinted borosilicate glass, I imagine.
The glass is mixed with any number of metal oxides which create a dark shade.
(I know that copper or iron oxides create a bluish-green tint, but I don't know if those are used for welding shades or not.) It's basically the same principle as the colored glass used in art glass windows and blown glassware.
Some welding shades are plated with a very thin layer of gold or silver instead, which blocks most light. Some welders prefer these over tinted glass ones. I don't.
Also, ingredients may be added which absorb infrared and UV rays but are less opaque to visible light. Glass, by itself, is modestly good at absorbing UV rays. It's hard to get a sunburn through a window.
