Funeral Blues? help please?
What do you think the theme is?
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
Thanks! :]
lol I didn't write this poem its for school its written by W. H. Auden I think.
obviously the theme is a funeral.
pain
sorrow
anger
regret
lost love
but as the poem goes through its motions of unraveling, you see the multiple rituals involved with a funeral and how preparing or doing a funeral can involve more grief and sorrow than the death of the loved one itself. it becomes ritualistic and makes you wonder if the person would really be happy with how their death was being "celebrated" so to speak.
also it takes all the joys one enjoyed with the deceased: time, thought, talking, singing, seeing stars, sitting in moonlight, sunshine, frolicking together at the beach, walking through the woods...all the good things in life spent together....and putting them away so that the pain is felt less....however all these things mentioned are impossible.
the moon will always haunt you...as will the sun, oceans, woods, and stars.
but even through the painful things....perseverance comes.
i don't know if you are writing from this perspective or if it has recently occurred in your life, but hope remains always.
think of Pandora's box...her curiosity led to her opening the box and unleashing all the evils into the world, out of fear for more bad things, she shut the box-----before hope could escape.
never block out hope from your life...God's hope may be the only thing that allows you to maintain consciousness and survival.
