I've just been sitting in my bedroom and my fluorescent lamp started getting brighter and brighter and then i switched it off, the tube has been saved but the ballast (old magnetic type) was producing large quantities of foul smelling smoke and was scorching hot, i couldn't put my hands anywhere near it!
Does anyone know what has happened to it? I thought that inside the ballast was just a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core, so I don't understand what could go wrong with it!
Like any man-made products, they do fail. The insulation failed and the wires shorted. The wires are covered with a very thin layer of shellac (or something similar) to reduce the size of the ballast and increase inductance. Basically, you're correct about the coil of wire. But there's also an insulating substance that created the foul smell. You can buy a replacement ballast from most hardware stores. It's almost as expensive as buying a new light fixture. Your call.
