Core Bit Reinforced
What type of MIG welder to buy, How much to spend?

I am looking to buy a welder for small hobbies around the house. I am in a residential home with a 100amp service so I was looking at the smaller MIG setups with flux core and option of gas (not likely to use gas but figured the option was worth getting). Typical weld would be on steel 1/8 thick, would like to be able to do just a bit thicker. I have read various articles on what to avoid (live contacts...). What I have the greatest concern with is what my house can run, can I get a unit with higher amps as long as I keep it at low settings. It would be nice to keep a standard receptacle plug but can run just about anything to the garage. As for projects I have fixed body panels on cars, would like to reinforce my dads utility trailer (1/8 angle) section rotted out. Really appreciate your help.

Hi Kelli

I do the same thing. Your electrical service is fine. I have 3 welders, a Lincoln stick 225 amp AC/DC, a Hobart 187 wire feed and a 200 amp Tig I picked up at auction.
None are over 50 amp service, if you are getting a new set up, I would ditch the idea of self fluxing wire, it makes a hell of a mess, worse than stick. My Hobart came with the gas set up as part of the cost it is a 185 amp wire feed and it does great. I have built several trailers and rebuild several with it. For really heavy stuff, I would use stick, but it sounds like most of your use will be like mine. The 175 Hobart is good for 1/4 inch, but I have used it on 1/2 inch. Bevel your edges and then fill in with multiple passes. With the wire feed, stay out of breezes, I have had welds catch fire so to speak. The wind gets into them and it is like a cutting torch. Should you get one that starts burning on you, just block the wind with your hand, do not touch it with your glove, it IS molten metal. I would not weld outside if the wind is over about 5 mph. If you weld inside, 3M makes a disposable mask for that, it filters ozone and metal vapor as well as the different shield materials.
Last ditch sell, get the gas, it is not that expensive and you will be much more pleased with the results. I can't tell you how much better your joints will look. Remember, weld hotter and move faster, you will get better penetration and your welds will hold up better.
Also, I really love the new helmets for welding, the auto darkening, I wear glasses to see much anymore, and it is great. If you are looking for something spectacular, get the Millermatic, 250 amp wire feed, my brother-in-law has one and I have actually sputter welded with it on supper thin material. I don't do that often, it is really unusual, and for larger things really a poor weld, but on stuff that is around 1/32nd or less it is cool.
Clark also makes a good unit for wire feed, they even have one which is a 175 amp wire feed gun that is real reasonable, but its only purpose to me is welding aluminum, I like the smaller handle of the normal wire feed.
As far as the plug for your electrical, I would use the 50 amp 4 wire plug. I made a welding cart, and I have 3 welders and my gas bottles on it and a small tool chest which I keep all welding relate stuff in like hammers, brushes, grinders, clamps, nozzle gel and soapstone pencils. I ran one cable to the cart and with the 4 wire, it gives me the option of also running 110 outlets as well from the cart. Having all my stuff in one spot and being able to move it where ever I want works great. I also made one for my dad when he saw mine, he is 80 and still farming so he really has more use for it than I do, I am like you, a hobbyist. I have a 50 foot cord which will get me a ways out and I did not have to buys extension cords for everything and then put the resepticals on the cart for each of the welders. Worked out very well for me, and will let me get to the bottom of the driveway.
Anyhow, good luck on your purchase and have fun, I know I have sure enjoyed mine over the years.
