Framing basement, if bottom plate is anchored into concrete floor, does the top plate HAVE to be attached?
I am framing my basement, and have attached the top plate to the floor joists, but when I go to attach it in the other direction, it seems we dont have a rim joist that is accessible...it's burried past the masonry wall and it is all covered with insulation....would it be ok to ONLY attach the bottom plate to the masonry floors instead of having it attached at the top AND the bottom...we are using 3 1/4 inch tapcon screws for the bottom plates, will that provide the support we need for standard dry wall? If not...what are some other options? Maybe a brace directly into the concrete wall?
A few theories at work here...
In Southern Colorado, we have very expansive soil. Basement frames require a floating plate wall. You glue and tattoo a green plate to the floor. You leave an inch and a half air space between that bottom plate, and the wall, which is nailed hard to the ceiling. Then use 6" spikes to fix the floating wall over the plate.
In North Georgia, we do not have expansive soil. You can build a wall actual size, glue and tattoo it to the floor, and nail it tight to the ceiling.
I wouldn't even mess with the concrete wall. Just cover it with a stud wall. Those things are almost always bowed, and out of square.
I'm not really sure what you are trying to do with your rimboard... Though I would suggest using the green bathroom drywall on the bottom row. Saves a lot of mildew abatement and tear out if you ever flood.
