Fiber cement shingle and surface bond cement?
My house (built 1914) has the original fiber cement shingles in good, solid condition with at least two coats of paint on them. My only problem: I hate them.
I have three questions: first, can I surface bond cement (SBC) over them similar to a stucco after I first strip the paint with a power washer or should I use a bonding agent over the old paint? Secondly, should I use either galvanized poultry netting or EIFS fiberglass netting over them? Lastly, can I use a product like Quikrete's one coat stucco or should I stick with the SBC with an acrylic fortifer mixed in? The SBC is a little more money, but I have experience with it and really like the way it finishes.
I know it's asking alot, but since I struck on this idea, I'm liking it more and more especially since I much prefer working with concrete and mortar's versus other fields.
Yes you can do what you want
Definitely strip the paint, a bonding agent will only improve the bond between what you add and the paint, so if the paint loses bond... you will lose whatever you have applied.
Even galvanized breaks down inside cement, the cement is very caustic, opposite of acidic and actually corrodes inside the concrete.
This is why some bridge structures collapse, the reinforcing steel has just rusted away.
Use the fiberglass.
stucco has been around for a very long time, if you are comfortable with that use it.
Be extremely sure of a good bond close to openings, doors, windows, etc., as this is usaully where water will get behind the coating and ruin the bond
