How to sand finished oak wood cabinets?
I am refinishing my finished oak cabinets to a dark walnut brown color. I've started to sand the wood, using progressively 120, 180, then 220 grit sand paper but how much of the original finish would I need to sand down? Do I just try and take the top varnish off (down to a haze, and not removing the stain) or do I need to go down to the bare wood?
If the sanded finish looks a bit muddled, in terms of color but is nice and smooth, will the dark brown color hide all and any inconsistencies?
Would using a chemical varnish and finish stripper be much easier than sanding?

I just realized that a gel stain might do a better job in my situation. Would I still need to do the same amount of sanding or can I get away with less?
If you leave any stain behind, you will be able to see it no matter how dark you go with your stain and it will drive you nuts.
Go back down to a 100 grit and work on those spots, give the whole cabinet a good once over so it's uniform, then work your way back up (this doesn't take as long as it sounds).
Stripper is only for nasty jobs that have layers of varnish, stain, paint, etc. I've found that for pieces in decent shape it's a heck of a lot easier, cheaper, and somewhat faster just to sand.
Gel Stain is good but not necessary. You can work with it a little more in terms of blending light and dark areas, but you'll have to test it out to see if you can blend it the way you want. I know sanding isn't fun, but I've found it much easier to do a good job sanding than to try and make a liquid soak into a piece of wood the way I want. Good Luck!
