Do you have a cat who chews on drawer pulls and dresser knobs? Ideas for stopping this...?
...behavior?
My cat chews on everything - furniture corners, lipstick tubes, refridgerator magnets - but she seems to prefer drawer pulls and cabinet knobs the best. I know this may seem like only a mildly irritating habit - unless you've had to pay to replace the expensive knobs or are awakended by this at 3 AM EVERY morning! I've had the cat to 2 different vets and both gave her a clean bill of health. One even said she had the cleanest, strongest teeth and gums he'd ever seen on a cat her age (13), and that was probably BECAUSE OF the chewing! I've tried every approach the vets have suggested - ignoring her when she does it, shouting "no" in a consistent tone of voice, giving her toys to divert her attention - and nothing works. I'd love to hear any other ideas, and especially from anyone who has successfully stopped similar behavior!
Hi Mack, What kind of food does your cat eat? This can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency. Make sure she is on a high quality, well rounded diet.
Also, do you have any interactive toys like feather wands? Try playing with her in a few 15 minute sessions throughout the day. She may be doing this out of boredom. I have a cat that will seek out any loose thread or string he can find if he gets bored and eat it. This is very dangerous and I have to keep him busy and keep the house kitty proof.
There is a product called "Bitter Apple" which is a spray that cats HATE the taste of. They sell it usually in the dog section of any pet store. You just spritz it on anything you think your cat will chew on and it should stop the behavior! Good luck!
