I have half a roman coin cleanly cut(microscope) it also has an M within a square stamped over it.?
The coin is bronze. The inscription unclear possibly part MIUS.The M within a square has been punched over the coin after the clean split with V shaped chisel(Microscope).I know coin splitting has been used in USA i.e. QUARTER...BIT.. were the ROMANS coin splitters too..I could understand this with precious metal,,GOLD/SILVER but Bronze?
This is one of those times that I need to see it or some one does. It is possible it was done back in Roman times but a clean cut is very suspicious. As to the counter stamp that too is up in the air and does not sound right. You can try www.piecesoftime.com Thom Bray is a well known Roman coin collector and dealer. Best I can do here. You can also try frank@fsrcoins.com that is Frank Robinson also an ancient coin dealer.
