Recessed lighting and bulb compatability?
We installed tapered baffles / recessed lighting in a room we are finishing in our basement. The specs state that the bulbs need to be PAR30's. The ones we picked out that we like are PAR38's. What is the reason for the specification? The PAR30's are small and do not fill in the entire space of the baffle (doesn't look good). The PAR38's fill in the entire space. Is it a heat issue? Will the 38's put out too much heat and cause a fire hazard? I can't think of any other reason that it would matter. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.
Added note based on answers: We currently have a Halogen bulb, 75-watt. It is a PAR38 according to the specs.
Par30 and Par38 are essentially the same except the par38 is wider. They use the same base.
The potential problem with using a Par38 in a fixture that calls for a Par30 is that the bulb may be too close to the trim or sides of the fixture. Imagine a table lamp with a lampshade that is too close to the bulb. It might work fine, it might discolor the shade or it might catch fire.
Because the Par38 is larger, the heat transference to the trim and fixture will be higher. The potential for damage or fire is a possibility. If Par38 lamps were acceptable, the manufacturer instructions would indicate both Par30 AND Par38. Because they did not indicate the larger size, the presumption is that the manufacturer does not consider it sufficiently safe. You could always contact the manufacturer's customer service line for further clarification.
