Will a polarized lens protect me from the light of an Arc Welder?
I need to photograph some welders working, and it would be incredibly obnoxious for me to try to do so while wearing an auto-darkening hood, or worse, a standard dark hood. I have fitted my camera (SLR) with a polarized filter in hopes that that might help at least a little, even if my shots do end up darker.
I wouldn't think that the polarizing filter would be enough protection. That filter only aligns the direct light waves while limiting reflected waves. That's how the filter puts blue sky in a photo that in reality appeared white from humidity. I suspect since the light from the arc will be direct, the filter will not screen any of it. I have had arc welder eye burn before. It's actually tiny blisters on the eyes. At night it feels like sand in your eyes - no good. Hmmm. I guess if it were me, I'd use dark sunglasses and just use the view finder as little as possible. An 80A filter (blue) would reduce the arc light some what, but in color film you'd end up with a blue tint on lighter objects. I guess I'd just do the sunglasses thing and minimize looking at the arc.
