How do i design a sand filter?
I have a problem with mud in my tank water used to water my garden. The water is pumped from a dam and is very muddy. I have the material and the skills to build a pressure vessel to act as a sand filter.
I have a stainless steel tank i can use, i just need to know where the water needs to go in, in relation to the sand and how the backflush works.
Yeah, would be easier to buy a sand filter - although they can only handle small amounts of mud before becoming blocked.
You can either use a gravity style sand filter, or pump the water through. The dirty water should be sprayed evenly over the top of the sand bed. The sand will retain all the mud and the clean water can be collected from the bottom.
For a backwash, the water flow is reversed. Water is pumped from the bottom of the sand bed, forcing all the dirt back to the top.
Be aware that there are better options than sand as a media available - check zeolite and even glass!
